Massive beer fest is back
JOBURG - Launching from the South African Breweries World of Beer in Newtown, the second Johannesburg Festival of Beer is ready to delight.
Martin Tucker, co-founder the Festival of Beer, said the festival started five years ago in the Mother City, but since last year, Jozi’s beer drinkers have been beckoning.
After the inaugural event last year, this year will see an even bigger festival in the City of Gold, and, according to Tucker, it will be the biggest gathering of craft brewers.
“The festival started out of the burgeoning craft beer and brew industry, and evolved into a showcase of the best of South African beers.”
In total there will be 36 beer stands, offering a variety of beers, and tastings, to beer fanatics.
The festival will also see the best food with various stalls ranging from beer batter waffles to gourmet steak rolls being paired with the range of beer.
“The Festival of Beer is about bringing beer champions from all over the country together to get a taste of the best brews on the local and international market,” Tucker said.
“We are thrilled to be heading back to Jozi again this year, a place that holds a lot of passion and promise in the brewing industry, and visitors can look forward to plenty of exciting features and surprises up our sleeves this year,” he added.
The launch at the SAB World of Beer was, however, not a coincidence. The brewers are one of the festival’s big sponsors, and have an ongoing commitment to ensure South African beers thrive.
At the festival lime-flavoured Castle Lite and chocolate-flavoured Castle Milk Stout will be available to taste from the national brewers.
“However, all vendors at the fesitval have 3m-by-3m stalls, and it is up to vendors to make it special,” Tucker said.
According to him this means SAB and smaller brewers have an equal opportunity to be noticed among festival-goers.
The Johannesburg Festival of Beer is on at the Pirates Sport Club in Greenside from 27 to 28 September.
