Credit card fraudster arrested in Norwood
NORWOOD - A man who tried to buy a carton of cigarettes using a fraudulent American Express at Food Lovers in Norwood was put behind bars.
According to Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane, the man went to the shop and took a carton of cigarettes worth R303,92, went to the teller and produced a gold American Express card.
Because the transaction was declined, the teller called the supervisor who then called the manager. The customer then offered to pay cash.
Tsoanyane said, “The suspect paid cash and the manager offered him a table at the coffee shop while he checked the card.”
After checking the card, the manager called the police and American Express to verify the card details. He even called a fraud expert from one of the banks who confirmed that the card was indeed fraudulent.
The 24-year-old suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon.
