Ten things you didn’t know about DJ ID
MABONENG - Well-known DJ ID, aka Akio Kawahito, likes to keep to himself most of the time.
Kawahito is currently touring Europe with hip-hop artist Reason, who is a DJ and his manager too.
Since pairing up in 2011, the two have opened for international artists Two-Chains, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Timberland.
Kawahito has also been nominated in the South African hip-hop awards for DJ of the Year, and has performed at festivals including Synergy, Oppikoppi, Earthdance and STR CRD.
City Buzz caught up with the half-Japanese, half-amazing 35-year-old DJ.
1. How many hats do you have in your house?
Probably around 12. Most of them are caps though.
2. Why do you think the number 11 isn’t pronounced as onety-one?
In Japanese it kinda is, it’s basically 10 and 1.
3. What do you think was the best thing before sliced bread?
The wheel seems pretty revolutionary but in context of bread, I would say the oven.
4. If you were given a chance, which reality TV show would you enter?
Definitely Amazing Race. It’s kinda lame because that’s probably everyone’s choice but I feel that would be the best one for me. It’s got all types of travel experiences and its pretty savvy. Best part is no games or backstabbing like other shows.
5. If I came to your house and opened the fridge, name three things I’d find on any given day?
Standard, in my fridge at all times are grapefruit juice, tomatoes and lemons.
6. What would you do if you were invincible for a whole day?
Fight terrorists, on Mars.
7. What’s the weirdest thing someone’s walked in on you doing?
Say what? [laughs]
8. What’s a saying that you’re best known for?
You’re [insert relevant action] the game. For instance, when Reason goes shopping and is carrying around a lot of bags, I’ll say “You’re Julia Roberts-ing the game.”
9. If you had to choose between R1 million and being able to fly, which one would you choose?
Fly definitely. A mil can be earned on my own.
10. You have the opportunity to go on a date with any celebrity in the world – who do you pick?
Tina Fey. I love funny women and find myself oddly attracted to her.
