Indie spectacular hits Newtown
NEWTOWN - Vodacom In The City brought much-anticipated international acts to the Johannesburg stage and got local audiences dancing.
Despite bitterly cold temperatures, Joburgers turned out in droves to Vodacom’s In The City musical feast in Mary Fitzgerald Square on 3 October.
The evening’s main entertainment kicked off with a performance from local favourites, P. H. Fat, the hip hop and rap duo who won a listener’s election to be chosen as the only local group on the main stage. The Cape Town-based group, in collaboration with rapper JungFreud, were followed by UK-based alternative dance band, the Crystal Fighters, who delivered a positive and energetic performance in the wake of the tragic death of drummer Andrea Marongiu.
Much-loved psychedelic rock act, MGMT, brought a dreamy routine to the stage, drawing cheers with favourite tracks, ‘Kids’ and ‘Electric Feel’. East London band Rudimental made crowds dance with the high-energy, feel-good fusion of electronic beats, strong vocals and instrumental melodies that the band calls ‘electronic soul’. The urban spectacular was brought to a close by Australian electronic duo, The Presets.
A dazzling night of electronic sounds promised to be only a precursor to an equally exhilarating experience as all four international bands reappeared alongside a plethora of local acts at Rocking the Daisies later the same weekend.
