Children involved at anti-Israeli protest in Killarney’s Woolworths

KILLARNEY -57 protesters were arrested near Killarney Mall on 25 October; three children were among the group.

As a part of the #BoycottWoolworths campaign initiated by Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, about 60 pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated at Woolworths in Killarney.

BDS representative Kwara Kekana said, “the protesters had gotten onto the bus and were leaving Killarney Mall, making their way towards Rosebank when police stopped the bus and arrested the group, including three children”. However she had acknowledged that the children were released earlier than the other protesters.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatjies said the protesters were taken in for contravening the public disturbance act and that “all the protesters were released the same day”. He said though there may have been children among the demonstrators, “to my knowledge no minors were detained.”

The group claims the aim of the demonstrations were to raise awareness to the fact that Woolworths sources it’s agricultural products from Israel and states that “almost all of Israel’s agricultural companies have illegal operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

The targeting of Killarney Mall was part of a wider campaign to “spread the message as far across as possible.”

Woolworths, through it’s official twitter account, has stated that they “did not lay charges” and the “safety of our customers as well as employees is [their] highest priority.”
