Polar Dust debut set for release
BRAAMFONTEIN - AFTER a two year-long labour of love, alternative rock band Polar Dust are set to release their debut album.
Into the Burning Water will be launched at Braamfontein’s Anti-Est. in November.
“It’s rather scary,” said frontwoman Sara ‘X’ Eksteen.
“Having worked so hard, I won’t know what to do with myself after [the album’s] release!”
The singer said she enjoyed the writing and recording process which has given new shape to her life.
“[I] carried on when I’d lost the small battles in between the good moments on the way, and pushed forward, regardless. The feeling of finishing the project is amazing,” she said.
The band’s writing and recording process has changed somewhat over the two years spent on the album. The singer said she learned about industry do’s and don’ts, especially when it comes to who musicians record with.
“Finding a producer that you really connect with is very rare,” she said.
“[This journey] taught me that writing an album is like writing two stories – one is what you write about when writing the music that features on the album, and the other is the story about how it was made.”
Eksteen said she not only learned perseverance and focus, but her influences changed, that she wrote “from different corners of the heart and mind”, and that it made her want to try different ways of recording in the future.
“The phase I’m entering now will definitely bring more raw sounds and interesting instruments, locations or ways of recording to the next album, while still keeping the Polar Dust signature.
The singer said the band aims to hit Cape Town next year, and possibly travel to Scandinavia, where Polar Dust first began in 2006, before being reformed in 2010 after Eksteen returned to South Africa from Iceland.
Into the Burning Water will be launched on 8 November at Anti-Est., De Beer Street, Braamfontein, at 8pm. A live video will be recorded at the event.
