Young actor travels to New York
JOBURG - After graduating from the Duma Ndlovu Academy (DNA) Performance Workshop, Joseph Sedibo now looks forward to his trip to New York.
Sedibo, who grew up in Daveyton and has been part of community theatre for years, not only left the academy with a sense of fullfilment after being the last of the hundreds of students to make it to the end, but also with an opportunity to gain some international experience.
“Earlier this year, after performing a monologue at the Montecasino stage, I was offered the opportunity to represent South Africa at the New York Film Academy,” he explained.
“Just this year, I have had things happen in my life that I would have never thought would have happened to me.”
From a young age, Sedibo found himself being shipped from one relative to another as his mother abandoned him as a baby and his father died in his early teen years.
“My life was filled with many dramatic moments. I grew up all over the place, I didn’t know who my mother was and I was taken from my stepmother because of family politics,” he said.
“Theatre seemed like an appropriate path for me since I was surrounded by drama. It’s on that stage that I can openly express myself and I can see myself one day making history in community theatre.”
Talking about his New York city plans, Sedibo said he plans on exploring as much as he can so he may come back with the kind of skills that will improve on community theatre.
