Conquer your addiction on Facebook

JOBURG - A Facebook discussion will be held in an attempt to help address addiction.

According to experts, people with an addiction do not have control over what they are doing, taking or using. Their addiction usually reaches a point where it becomes harmful.

Addiction can refer to substance dependence such as drugs and alcohol, or behavioural addiction such as gambling, sex, shopping, and eating disorders.

To learn more about this topic, Sadag is hosting a Facebook Friday online chat on 21 November at 1pm with Dr Adele Pretorius, who is the treatment director of the National Gambling Treatment Programme (NRGP). While psychologist Craig Traub, who is an expert in addictions and understands the behaviour, will be online at 7pm. To log in, simply go to their website www.sadag.org for the link, or visit their Facebook page, The South African Depression and Anxiety Group.

“The first step to recovery for the user, is acknowledging they have a problem – which can often prove difficult,” said Sadag.

“Family support is crucial during these times. Educating yourself and your loved ones can help improve or facilitate in the recovery process.”
