MUST READ: Craighall and surrounding suburbs to fall under Randburg police station
CRAIGHALL - The suburbs of Craighall, Riepen Park, Hurlingham and Glenadrienne will no longer fall under the Parkview Police Station.
As a part of a larger process to realign police districts with magisterial districts, the suburbs situated in “the triangle” between Jan Smuts and William Nicol will officially fall under Randburg Police Station from 1 December.
Parkview Station Commander Colonel Nanda Moodley explained that all the cases in that area go to the Randburg Magistrates’ Court, and that the change in police station is part of a broader process that began in 2012.
Cases in the Parkview policing area now exclusively go to either the Hillbrow or Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, whereas previously the Randburg Magistrates’ Court was also included as the area of Craighall and surrounding suburbs was attributed to them.
The CraigPark Residents’ Association has informed members through their newsletter, although deputy chairperson Wendy McAllister cites her concern noting that they have not yet fully grasped the logistics that the change in police station brings. An example of this is the average response time it takes for a patrol vehicle from Randburg Police Station to reach Craighall.
Furthermore, confusion is anticipated as sometimes the suburbs of Craighall and Craighall Park are muddled, Craighall Park will remain under the sector overseen by Parkview police, while new cases in Craighall will have their dockets sent to Randburg police.
The Station Commander of Randburg Police Station Brigadier Lettie Hugo noted that Craighall will be added as an extension to their sector one, which includes Bordeaux and the Randburg central business district.
Hugo pointed out that despite the increase in the geographical area added to the responsibilities of >Randburg Police Station, they will not be given extra resources, in terms of staff, to govern the area.
New cases reported after the official change in jurisdiction will be investigated by Randburg police, while Parkview police will still be responsible for previous ongoing cases.
