New face for acid attack victim

Sydenham acid attack victim undergoes final skin graft.

The victim of a vicious acid attack in Sydenham in November will soon complete her medical treatment after undergoing a final skin graft.

Ines Antonio (23) was allegedly attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Jan Pieterse (41), in a Sydenham street in front of the couple’s daughter (4). She was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital in a critical condition.

Pieterse fled the scene and was arrested on 27 November by Norwood police at his father’s retirement home in Vereeniging. He was denied bail when he appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court earlier in December, and was transferred to Sun City Correctional Services Centre, where he awaits his trial for attempted murder next year.

According to media reports, the attack interrupted Antonio’s plans to return to school to complete her matric, and she is now afraid that her scarred face will frighten her daughter.
