Initial report: 15 January 2015, 17:45pm – A school pupil from Roosevelt Primary was dragged by a car along Beyers Naude Drive after he attempted to resist the theft of his cellphone.
According to Ward 87 Councillor Amanda Forsythe, a concerned resident in the Melville area called to inform her that a little boy had been found injured along the road near West Park Cemetery, and that he needed immediate help from emergency services, it was initially speculated that the boy was thrown from a car in an attempted kidnapping.
However it later emerged that the boy of about 8 years old, was a pupil of Roosevelt Primary and was walking home with a friend after school on 15 January at around 2.45pm, when a car drove past and the assailant tried to rob him of his cellphone.
Forsythe said that the little boy resisted, clung onto the assailant’s car and was dragged along the road by the car.
When she was informed of the incident she immediately contacted Parkview Police Station Commander Colonel Nanda Moodley.
Colonel Moodley confirmed that after he received Forsythe’s call and he sent a police captain to the scene who waited for the arrival of an ambulance.
The boy was reportedly taken to Helen Joseph Hospital, and is in a stable condition.
Forsythe also noted that bystanders on the scene were remarkably helpful as they brought a blanket for the boy while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, and immediately informed staff at Roosevelt Primary School who then contacted his parents.
The boy’s friend also accompanied him to the hospital in the ambulance.
