Bull Horns Panic Button a hit in Parkhurst

“We’ve been delighted at how Little Chelsea residents have embraced our application,” said Rob Maclean from the App Developer Studio, a local company responsible for building the application.

Residents of Little Chelsea, Parkhurst and security provider NYPD have been piloting the free Bull Horns Panic Button app.

According to Parkhurst resident James Bernstein, the application is very simple, “It is very easy to use and it’s nice to contact many people at once.”

Managing director of NYPD Greg Margolis said, “Nowadays people have their phones on them day and night so it makes sense that they can use it to get help from us. The GPS locates exactly where they are, even if they can’t speak or are on the move,” he said.

Users press the big red panic button in the application and NYPD are immediately alerted, and can see users’ exact location on a map (this is updated every minute in case they are moving).

“The armed response officers can even access a ‘selfie’ photo the resident loaded when they activated the app which helps to identify them in an emergency,” explained Margolis.

According to Margolis, the pilot has been so successful that they’re now rolling it out across the whole of Parkhurst and Parktown North.

NYPD will even be able to come to the assistance of their clients when they are not at home, but are out and about in the suburb or precinct.

“The next version would allow users to add and receive alerts of suspicious activities, including photos. This will help the community and security companies to be a lot more proactive in clamping down on crime,” said Maclean.

The Bull Horns Panic Button app can be downloaded for free from Apple’s AppStore or Google Play.
