Gandhi Square statue vandals to appear in court
JOHANNESBURG – Following the unrest of the nation regarding a number of statues that have stood for many years and reminded the people of their past and heritage, the latest to fall victim to vandalism is the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi Square.
The statue that stands in the middle of Gandhi Square has been smeared with white paint.
The vandalism of the statue of the Indian leader was reported to have happened yesterday afternoon, with one 21-year-old male being arrested in connection with the act.
The man who was arrested was found with painted signage calling for the removal of the statue.
He is set to appear in the Magistrate’s Court today.
It is still unclear whether he was helped by any accomplices.
