UPDATE: Manhunt underway for cop killer
JOBURG - A police officer has been killed and another injured in a shootout with hijackers.
UPDATE: 11 July 2015, 1:30pm – A warrant officer from Cleveland was shot and killed in the early hours of 11 July. The officer was killed in an armed robbery at Jeppe Hostel.
It is alleged that the police officers on duty responded to a radio announcement that there was a delivery truck that was being robbed in front of the Jeppe Hostel main entrance. The truck had come to deliver bread at the various spaza shops in the hostel when it was held at gunpoint by four suspects.
Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale from the South African Police Services said “They forced their way onto the truck, stole about R1500.00 from the driver.”
When the suspects went to the back of truck to try and break the safe, the driver fled to ask for assistance at Jeppe police station.
“Police officers from Cleveland arrived at the scene and a shootout ensued during which the officer was injured in the neck. He was rushed to hospital where he was certified dead on arrival”, said Mogale.
A manhunt is underway to locate the suspects and cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery have been opened for investigation.
INITIAL REPORT: 11 July 2015, 10:30am – According to Twitter reports, one police officer was killed in a shootout between the South African Police Service and hijackers.
@crimeairnetwork tweeted at 9.29am on 11 July that the shootout had taken place near Jeppe Mens Hostel in Johannesburg.
The incident involved a Blue Ribbon Bread truck which had been hijacked, and the police officers.
Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for the Hillbrow police confirmed the incident which happened at about 4am.Police are still on the scene.
