Get our local lads to the World Scholar’s Cup final
PARKTOWN – Three Grade 10 pupils from Parktown Boys' High School recently qualified for the final Tournament of Champions in the prestigious World Scholar's Cup (WSC) at Yale University in the United States, set to take place in November.
The WSC is in international team academic tournament with students from over 40 countries participating and focuses on bringing students from different cultures together to discuss issues and ideas which are relevant to today and the future.
Zidaan Habib, Tristan Wilkinson and Gabriel Matthews came first in South Africa, and second in Africa during the second round held in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.
“These boys represent the top five percent of more than 12 000 pupils who participated at 50 regional events across six continents in the last year,” said founder and CEO of the World Scholar’s Cup, Daniel Berdichevsky.
“They explored subjects from science to technology and from literature to the arts and competed in a series of rigorous academic challenges.”
According to their motto, the World Scholar’s Cup aims to inspire a world community of future scholars and leaders, describing its approach as “inclusive, encouraging, forward-looking, team-oriented and whimsical”.
Both supporters of the team and the school are appealing to the public to assist them in raising the necessary funds to get this talented trio to the competition in the US.
Spokesperson for the team, Stephen Matthews, stated that they need to raise R150 000 as soon as they can.
“Government schools such as Parktown Boys stand out from the rest in overcoming many challenges to provide South Africa’s brightest with a sound education,” Matthews said.
“The boys are appealing to educational institutions, companies and anyone with the means to help them, to rally in support in order to get them to Yale so they can proudly represent South Africa.”
