Jeppe Quondam Sports Club receives face lift

JOBURG - Jeppe Quondam Sports Club in Bedfordview has been transformed into a modern version of its former self, with more than R1 million invested into the renovations.

Bob Huntington, chairman of the club said, “The renovation has definitely been a long time coming. With no changes made to the clubhouse in more than 15 years, we knew it was time to revitalise the club. We hope to create a new atmosphere here, one that attracts younger members and encourages the social side of sport.”

Jeppe Old Boys is filled with history as it was started more than 100 years ago by ex-Jeppe Boys’ High School scholars who met once a week to play table tennis and socialise, and was formally established in the late 30s in Kensington. WWII saw the club purchase new grounds in Bedfordview where members used an old farmhouse as their watering hole. In 1949, a clubhouse and change rooms were built. Shortly afterwards, a manager’s office and swimming pool were added.

“We have received a lot of support from current members, who have given us really positive feedback with regard to the changes. Seeing the club as it stands today, I can’t help but get a little emotional. I really am so proud of what we have managed to achieve here and I hope that future members enjoy these facilities as much as we have all enjoyed them in the past,” added Huntington.
