Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn inducts new president

Judy Symons takes over the leadership of the Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn with a commitment to growing member involvement while continuing the club’s focus on supporting children through education.

The Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn held an induction ceremony on the morning of July 15, where it officially inaugurated Judy Symons as its newly appointed president.

Symons clearly articulated her vision for the year ahead, emphasising the club’s commitment to bettering children’s lives through education.

Throughout the ceremony, club members shared their confidence and words of encouragement in Symons’ leadership, as Jankees Sligcher, the outgoing president, formally gave up the reins, passing them off to Symons.

Symons explained that assuming the role came with mixed emotions. “It is quite intimidating, and I do feel a little overwhelmed, but I do believe in Rotary, and I know that it is one of the world’s organisations worth serving. So, I do feel quite proud as well.”

Moving forward, Symons said one of her priorities is to make sure that every single member is actively involved in the activities of the club.

“I hope to involve all our club members actively so that they find the experience of being a Rotarian rewarding and meaningful, and have a feel-good approach as well.”

She emphasised that the club will continue being involved in the education and wellbeing of children. “All our projects revolve around education and the wellbeing of children.

These include working with formal educational institutions, children’s homes, Mandela Day projects, and fundraising through golf days and other events.”

Sligcher said he was happy to hand over the role after helping strengthen the club. “It has always been a pleasure to come back and help out a club that was actually needing a little bit more glue to get cohesive membership again.”

Sligcher said that although he was stepping down as president, he would continue doing his part, and that the club’s vision remains the same. “The vision of Rotary Club New Dawn is children.

We help children in need, so the biggest priority is education, and that is what we need.”

The ceremony ended in high spirits as members took turns to engage with their new president.
