Newtown Junction celebrates Heritage Month
NEWTOWN - In September, Newtown Junction will welcome in spring and celebrate Heritage Month by featuring three events filled with the season's hottest, must-have hair trends, the pizzazz and high energy of dance, workshops, markets and a book fair.
All these events and activities are set to take place from 5 September.
The first offering at Newtown Junction is Hair on Junction, hosted by two young entrepreneurs, Margaret Chandia and Lead SA’s youth hero Taynita Harilal.
Hair on Junction is a one-stop market where visitors can celebrate their ‘HAIRitage’. It’s an exclusive showcase of the must-know and must-have trends in hair styling, where entrepreneurs can market their hair products and consumers can see what kind of hair trends and products are available in Gauteng.
“We hope this Hair on Junction market will grow into something can scale across the continent,” said Chandia.
“It’s also a platform where ideas can be shared and we are encouraged by the opportunity that this new retail space allows for up-and-coming entrepreneurs to engage with their consumers,” Harilal added.
Another event celebrating Heritage Month is Jazzy Masala Creative’s Dansation 2015 – a swirl of colour, movement, music, innovation, trends and entertainment. Here audiences can see a performance of a few dance excerpts, plus a public dance session for all to join in. Dansation, created by producer, creative director and choreographer of the Jazzy Masala Academy, Versha Magan, derives its choreography from a range of styles including Bollywood, classic Indian, jazz and hip-hop. Magan is committed to shining the spotlight on the Indian performing arts.
“Local talent needs a great platform and for me Dansation is another stepping stone to creating versatility with movement and Indian dance,” she said.
“What we are presenting is diverse, magical and sensational and it will leave the audiences awestruck.”
Newtown Junction will also host poetry readings leading up to the annual Jozi Book Fair.
“Given its location and history, Newtown Junction is more than just a shopping mall, it’s a cultural space and we invite all art and culture institutions, as well as members of the arts, crafts and cultural fraternity to come and engage with us and create a space that celebrates South Africa’s diversity, talent and culture,” said asset manager of Atterbury Holdings, Michael Clampett.
