What is JPOMA?

JOBURG - The City Buzz team wants you to know what JPOMA is and what it does for the city we love.

“Johannesburg Property Owners & Managers Association (JPOMA) itself does not upgrade buildings but our members do,” said manager Angela Rivers.

“JPOMA is an association that addresses matters of common interest to its members. This includes industry lobbying, council service delivery, energy efficiency, tenant rights and precinct upgrades.”

The company was opened in 2003 as an organisation that would tend to the needs and interests of building owners, as well as their tenants.

The founding members were asked by the City Council to form an association to have one voice to represent property investors in the inner city.

The founding members included city high-rollers such as ex-councillor Sol Cowen, Renney Plit of Afhco Holdings, Brian Miller from Ithemba Property and Sandy Barnes from Jozi Housing.

Cowen and Barnes have since retired and Miller passed away last year December, which has left the company under the control of the company’s current directors Plit, who is now chairman of the company; Nic Barnes, from Jozi Housing; Rian Reyneke, from Ithemba Property; and Jonothan Cohen, from the Urban Task Force.

The council now only deals with one association instead of dealing with individual investors, thus making the process of initiating building rejuvenations and upgrades easier for the City.

Now, instead of dealing with a number of investors, the City only deals with one and there are 36 members of the association.

The members of the company collectively provide more than 40 000 housing units, that is 500 000m² of both retail and commercial space, which adds up to more than R10-billion of property owned.
