Literacy centre to open in Norwood
NORWOOD - Read up about a new centre which is set to teach children English as their second language.
The Link Literacy Project, a volunteer-based programme which provides literacy lessons to pupils in Grade 2 and 3, is set to open its 10th school-based literacy support centre in Gauteng when the new Link Centre at Norwood Primary School opens in April.
The children who attend the programme have two lessons per week on a one-on-one basis, sometimes with two pupils per one teacher.
Margaret Hill, the Norwood-based Link Centre manager said, “In regular school days, teachers are not able to work one on one or in small groups with children,” she said.
According to Hill, the aim of the programme is to reinforce reading and comprehension skills so children could exit the foundation phase of schooling with strong literacy skills and with confidence.
“Everything is built on reading and comprehension. If a child doesn’t understand the question, or the instruction, or the source material, she or he cannot succeed in any other project,” said Hill.
There are nearly 400 volunteers working in the programme. Each volunteer works two hours a week.
“You don’t need a special skill and certainly don’t need to be a teacher. We give you the basic training materials and the programme is designed and structured in such a way that you can’t really go wrong,” concluded Hill.
