Buy from the boot

MABONENG – Buy almost anything from the boot of a car.

You’ve heard of a garage sale, and City Buzz can almost surely bet that you’ve also heard of a boot sale.

Yes, that’s right – Maboneng is all about the market scene and now they’re bringing you one with even more of a twist! No, it’s not a sale of shoes, but rather a sale of various items that are sold out of the retailer’s car boot.

With the emergence of markets including Market on Main and the 1Fox markets, the super-trendy daytime events, and then the establishment of the popular night markets, Maboneng Precinct was forced to push the envelope and once again pioneer a new frontier on the shopping front.

Maboneng Access City Bula Boot Market had its first event on 26 March – and judging by the number of people who attended the event, it was a great success. Bula Boot means, open the boot, and the owners and precinct managers want you to forget the idea that car-boot sales are dull and dusty.

This market is Jozi’s car-boot sale of the 21st Century – no junk to be found in these trunks – and is a treasure trove.

Visitors to the market are invited and urged to browse the offerings, stroll through the street of open car-boot thrift stores, be amazed and shop until they drop.

There’s a great choice from vintage clothing to African print and modern fashion, as well as arts and crafts, music and beauty products, so bring a big bag and expect to fill it.

Ntombi Makhanye of Access City Bula Boot Market explained that while the market is quite informal, the vendors follow the same rules, regulations and procedures as with any other market in order to retail their goods.

The trendy market takes place on the corner of Staib and Beacon streets on 30 April, so make sure not to miss out.
