Good work by police lands gun-toter behind bars

YEOVILLE – Man arrested for discharging firearm in public area.

A man in his late 20s was arrested for possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, as well as for discharging a firearm in a public area.

Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville Police Station said, “The police were on a routine patrol on 2 May at about 3am when they heard gunshots. They went towards the place where a shot was fired and saw a man running away after he saw the police vehicle.” He added that police managed to apprehend the suspect on the corner of Fotsque and Raleigh streets.

“When they searched him, a 9mm pistol was found in his possession and the serial number had been filed off,” explained Malatji.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station and is expected to appear at Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
