NFF fundraising tournament unites netball and community in Norwood

Sixteen teams took to the court during the NFF Fundraising Tournament, bringing individuals together in a celebration of sport and community during Women’s Month.

The Norwood Fit Fusion (NFF) Fundraising Tournament gathered 16 netball teams for a day of spirited competition, fundraising and fun at Paterson Park on August 15.

The tournament, held during Women’s Month, was intended to promote physical activity and sports among women and girls while raising funds to support NFF.

Amanda Mposh Nkalitshana, the organiser of the event, said witnessing women and children participating was rewarding and shone a light on her wish to see more women and girls focusing on their mental and physical well-being through sport.

Among the participating teams was G-Stars Netball Club from Alexandra. Coach Phindile Shabalala said, “It was great to see the players showing their skills, especially the 15-year-olds; it showed their confidence.”

Phindile noted that the shortage of referees was a challenge. “Even the older players had fun, although the challenge was the lack of referees; paying referees is a big challenge for our emerging teams.”

Coach Minnie Mbele from NFF said, “The NFF Fundraising Tournament was more than just a netball event; it was a day filled with love, support, teamwork, laughter, competition and community spirit.”.

She added that the support from the Norwood and Orange Grove communities was appreciated and showed that success is gained when people work towards a common goal. “This event reminded me that when a community comes together with one goal, amazing things can happen.”

Mpho Mangokoana, a parent who attended the tournament, said that with continuous support, the tournament could eventually be a quarterly fundraising event aimed at supporting the girl child.

NFF is now looking for additional support and donations, with another tournament planned for August 14 next year.
