A man’s attempt to rob a woman in Kew was recently foiled after family members of the victim nabbed the suspect in the process.
The incident unfolded as the woman was walking home when an unknown man approached her.
Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, said upon approaching her, the accused allegedly demanded the woman’s valuables. “He demanded her cellphone and then threatened to kill her with a razor [blade] if she refused or tried to do anything foolish,” Maphakela said.
“Despite the threat, the woman refused to hand over her cellphone and at that point, the accused allegedly started assaulting her which caused the victim to scream for help.”
Fortunately, the woman’s mother and sister happened to be driving past and stopped. Upon seeing their vehicle stopping, the man attempted to run away but the women managed to chase him down and apprehend him.
“They managed to take the weapon away from the man and called the police who, upon arrival, arrested the accused,” Maphakela said.
He confirmed that he was detained at Bramley Police Station where he was charged with armed robbery and has since appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
