A male, aged 34, was arrested for robbery in Yeoville on the corner of Becker and Fortesque roads at about 1.30am on 21 May.
Yeoville Police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the victim was walking home from a club when three males accosted him. One of the suspects broke a bottle and threatened him.
“The suspects robbed him of his cellphone and cash. While they were still robbing the victim, a vehicle came by and the suspects tried to hide. The victim alerted the passerby motorist who chased the suspects.”
According to Malatji, one of the suspects took a brick and broke the motorist’s windscreen. The police were alerted and the suspect was apprehended at a nearby block of flats hiding inside a unit.
“He was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station for robbery and a charge of malicious damage to property was added,” he said.
However, Malatji said that while police were busy effecting the arrest of the suspect, another male approached them and started fighting with them, asking them why they were arresting the suspect on his property.
“He further insulted a female police officer who was also at the scene, uttering derogatory remarks,” explained Malatji.
He added that when the officers returned to the station with the suspect, the same male who had insulted them arrived and continued to insult the officers and tried to remove the suspect by force. He was also arrested and charged with interference with police work and crimen injuria.
Both suspects are expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon.
