The Johannesburg East Police Cluster, formerly known as Hillbrow Cluster, arrested 180 suspects between 18 and 24 May.
According to Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi of the Johannesburg East Cluster, the suspects were arrested for committing crimes ranging from rape to murder and armed robbery.
The cluster in made up of seven police stations which include Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville.
The suspects were arrested for the following:
- One suspect for rape
- Thirteen suspects for armed robbery
- Eighteen suspects for common assault
- Eleven suspects for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm
- Nineteen suspects for theft
- Twenty-six suspects for drinking and driving
- Five suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms
- Five suspects for possession of drugs
- Two suspects for fraud
- Four suspects for trespassing
- Ten suspects for malicious damage to property
- Eight suspects for possession of suspected stolen property
- Eleven suspects for shoplifting
- Six suspects for possession of dagga
- Twenty-six suspects for drinking and driving
- Seven illegal immigrants
- One for crimen injuria and interfering with a police officer
- Five suspects for housebreaking
- One suspect for attempted hijacking
- One suspect for contravening second-hand goods act.
“The suspects have appeared in different courts such as Hillbrow, Jeppe and Johannesburg. Some have paid their fines while others are out on bail and others remained in prison,” concluded Munyayi.
