Tree falls on car

BRAMLEY – Councillor assures residents that fallen tree incident will be investigated.

A recent accident caused by an unsteady tree falling on top of a passing car in Bramley has left residents baffled and suspicious. The incident took place on 10 October when a VW Polo was hit by the tree along Forest Road, causing significant damage to the car.

Jack Thenga, a resident living on Forest Road, explained that residents were alerted to the incident when they heard a loud noise. “When we went to investigate, we saw that one of the trees along the road had fallen on top of a passing car and caused damage to the bonnet,” he said.

“Luckily the driver was not hurt and upon further investigation, we discovered that the fallen tree had been uprooted, leaving it unsteady.”

Thenga explained that it was suspected that shoddy work by a contractor was the cause of the incident, as there had been work recently carried out along the road to install pipes. He alleged that the contractor had uprooted the trees during the installation but instead of removing them after the work was completed, left them as they were.

“I decided to report this because these uprooted trees are a hazard and could cause more damage to passing cars,” he said.

Responding to Thenga’s concerns was Ward 74 councillor, David Fisher who confirmed the incident and that work had been carried out along the road, but it was done correctly and seemed to have left no damage to the trees. “City Parks and I also carried out an inspection of the trees and this particular one looked healthy and intact, it did not look like it had been uprooted in recent months,” he said.

Fisher confirmed that the tree has since been removed and that the City would also send an arborist to re-examine if any of the other trees had been affected. Furthermore, a contract had been issued to prune the trees along the road, which Fisher explained would happen early next week.

He concluded by thanking residents for being active regarding the reporting of issues and urged them to let as many people know of any issues affecting the community. “I also urge residents to report any issues to the City and if these are not resolved within a reasonable amount of time, to inform me and I will then escalate them,” he said.
