Sergeant Iris Phoko of Parkview Police Station, which forms part of the Johannesburg East Cluster (JEC), was named the woman of the year at the Gauteng Prestige Awards ceremony.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Gauteng police in Pretoria and the cluster then hosted its own event at Marks Park in Emmarentia to celebrate the prestigious achievement of Phoko.
“It feels great and I feel honoured,” said Phoko. “It really motivates me to continue doing my job efficiently and in the right way. It really feels good to know that there are people out there who recognise and appreciate one’s hard work and dedication.”
The event was attended by the Johannesburg East Cluster Commander, Major General Dimakatso Ndaba; the JEC Community Police Forum chairperson, Denzel Goldstone; commanders from all seven stations within the cluster; as well as communications officers, visible police heads, support commanders, social crime prevention officers, cluster personnel and other members of Parkview Police Station.
Sandile Mkhize, Parkview police’s head of visible policing said he knew Phoko would win because he knew the type of hard worker she was. “I really had no doubt she’d win; she has really done the station proud and we feel honoured to have her,” Mkhize said.

Phoko is now nominated for the National Prestige Awards and the cluster’s management wished her good luck in their hopes that she will bring back the national award.

“It is really motivating seeing Phoko recognised for her hard work,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, communications officer for Parkview Police Station. “We, as a station, are very proud of her and the way she is able to work so easily with the community to achieve excellent results. We commend her for her award and her hard work.”
The cluster is made up of seven police stations including Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville.
