Interwaste responds to public outcry over rotten stench

WYNBERG – The company says it has taken necessary measures to eliminate odours.

Interwaste has referred North Eastern Tribune to their PR agency, facilities manager, Geoff Kamps for comment after businesses in the area complained about a terrible smell emanating from Interwaste’s Wynberg property.

Kamps said, “Interwaste in Wynberg is aware of concerns raised by businesses in the area and is reviewing additional measures to continue improving our operations. All complaints result from a localised area, and we are taking the necessary measures to eliminate any possible odours.”

As such, he said, they only took in municipal solid waste (everyday items that are discarded by the public) and dry industrial waste. “This waste is then stored for bulk transport during the evenings. Interwaste has extended the water system that will eliminate potential odour to additional areas on our site,” he said.

In addition to this, they have completed construction in the bottom south-west corner to close all gaps between the wall and beams in a bid to contain any potential odours.

With regards to the protest and the community’s anger towards Interwaste, Kamps said, “Interwaste proactively managed the protest that occurred at our depot by giving community members and relevant businesses the opportunity to voice out their concerns with the appropriate Interwaste representative.”

After a ‘hostile response’ and threats of disrupting their operations, he said, Interwaste was ‘compelled to rely on security to manage the issue’ – and the protesters dispersed.
