Wits medical building evacuated
JOBURG – Staff and students at Wits Medical School located in Parktown have been sent home following a fire scare

Fire alarms went off after smoke was detected on some floors at the Wits Medical School located in Parktown on 3 March.
According to Professor Martin Veller, who is dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, no fire was detected, except for a visible puff of smoke. “The source of the smoke is still being investigated. No fire has been seen yet,” Veller said.

“The Wits Emergency Response Team and a fire engine are on the scene. The building has been completely evacuated and no one has been injured or hurt. Staff and students have been sent home.”
Spokesperson for the university, Shirona Patel, indicated that reports of smoke at the institution came in at about 10am. “The smoke triggered the smoke detectors which in turn led to the immediate evacuation of the building. The source of the smoke is still being investigated,” she explained.
