City of Joburg launches operation ‘Bring Jozi Back’

JOBURG – Criminal arrests made in February amount to 96 as Metro police clamp down on crime and grime in the inner city.

By launching Operation Buyisa iJozi, or Bring Jozi Back, the City of Joburg aims to clamp down on the crime and grime affecting large parts of the inner city.

In an effort to realise this vision of a safer and cleaner Johannesburg, the Metro police K9 Unit recorded 99 arrests during the month of February, according to the Metro police communications department.

Operation Buyisa Ijozi was seen as a concerted effort to put the breaks on rampant criminal activity.

The following arrests were made:

  • 1 for other crimes
  • 2 for fraud
  • 3 for stolen property
  • 4 for assault
  • 4 for possession of stolen goods
  • 7 for theft
  • 8 for hijacking
  • 11 for possession of illegal firearms
  • 13 illegal immigrants
  • 17 for vehicle theft
  • 29 for drug possession.

During some of these arrests, stolen property to the value of R60 million, including cellphones found in two hijacked trucks and 28kg of drugs, was confiscated by police officers.
