Bird spotters see shy Victor at Parkview Golf Club

PARKVIEW – Bird watchers were recently intrigued with the spotting of the honeyguide bird.

Victor, the honeyguide, was the star bird at the recent Parkview Golf Club’s autumn bird spotters’ walk.

The particularly bashful bird, who takes his nickname from the sound of his call, was spotted in the trees close to Greenside High School by some of the 50-odd enthusiasts during the early morning walk from the club.

In total, the bird spotters saw about 50 species during the two-hour expedition guided by three ornithologists from Africa Nature Training.

“As Johannesburg has developed its own micro-climate over the past few decades, many woodland birds have migrated into the city and we’re seeing more and more varieties in urban areas,” said guide, Andre Veenstra.
