Special votes for the Ward 73 byelection, in Norwood, Killarney and Houghton go extremely well
KILLARNEY – Special voters take less than 15 minutes to cast their votes
Special voters in the Ward 73 by-elections said the voting process was efficient and adequate.
The two-day by-elections, administered by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), kicked off at four voting stations on 4 April. The stations include Paterson Recreation Centre, Killarney Country Club as well as Norwood and Houghton primary schools.
After casting their special votes at a school in Houghton, Lynne Furman and Lyzelle van der Linde both said it was smooth sailing at the station. Furman said, “I’ve been voting here for many years and I’m happy with how they have organised the process here – it is very fast and easy.”
From verifying their names to finally making their cross and posting their ballots into the voting box, each special vote took less than 15 minutes.
The general voting will take place on 5 April.
The by-elections in Ward 73 comes after the resignation of previous Democratic Alliance’s (DA) councillor Mia Snyman in December last year. Snyman resigned four months after the local government elections took place on 3 August with the DA taking over the reins from the ANC.
Eleanor Huggett is the DA candidate contesting the by-elections alongside the ANC’s Stanley Letsoalo and the EFF’s Shaun Gavaza-Nwaiwu.

According to an IEC officer in Houghton, about nine of the expected 35 special voters had cast their votes by 11am.
The ward includes Norwood, Oaklands, Lower Houghton, Orange Grove, Fellside, Victoria, Fairwood, Mountain View and part of Orchards, Killarney and Upper Houghton.
