Ward 73 by-election to replace the former ward councillor, Mia Snyman

KILLARNEY – Members of the ANC, DA and EFF set up their tents outside the Killarney Country Club, one of four voting stations, to show their support.

The by-election for Ward 73, which covers parts of Houghton Estate, Killarney, Orange Grove and Norwood took place on 5 April. The by-elections were held after the former ward councillor, Mia Snyman, stepped down.

Members of the African National Congress, Economic Freedom Fighters and Democratic Alliance set up their respective tents to show their support for their candidates, outside Killarney Country Club, one of four voting stations set up in Ward 73.

Councillor Oupa Sako from the EFF was there to show his support for the EFF councillor for Ward 73, Shaun Gavaza Nwaiwu. He said, “The campaign has been going very well, we [haven’t] experienced a lot of challenges so far. We are bringing in a lady who is going to be the face of the EFF here, we believe in gender equality.”

Ruby Mathang, a member of the ANC and a member of the Regional Executive Committee, said he was confident with the ANC’s campaign. “We’ve been going door-to-door, [distributing] pamphlets in the area and going to high-visibility areas, so we’ve been doing the bit that we can. For every candidate that stands there is hope.” Mathang was present to support the ward candidate, Stanley Letsoalo.

Members of the DA were also sure to show their support for their candidate, Eleanor Hugget, with Irene Rügheimer, Ward 81 councillor, also being present.

“The campaigning went well considering this is a by-election close to the election of last year. She [Eleanor Hugget] has been getting hold of all the resident associations and working with their issues so she’s brought herself on top of what the issues are,” said Rügheimer.

According to Rügheimer, the morning had been quiet but they were expecting a higher turnout in the afternoon.

One of the voters present, Claire Quail, who was a ward councillor for 18 years, said she had never expected to see the DA in charge of Johannesburg and hoped there would be a good turnout for the by-election.
