VIDEO: New station commander for Hillbrow Police Station

Hillbrow Police Station welcomed Brigadier Stanley Nevhuhulwi as the new station commander.

Nevhuhulwi took over from Brigadier Vukile Ntandane as of 1 May.

Delighted with his appointment, Nevhuhulwi said his first order of business would be to build a working relationship with the people of Hillbrow and get them involved in the station’s daily affairs.

“Encouraging more proactive engagements between police and the community by building community involvement in their area is an integral part of my vision,” Nevhuhulwi said.

“Building a solid partnership block by block and street by street will enable us to take back the streets in order for people to run businesses and work with peace of mind.”

Outlining his vision, Nevhuhulwi iterated that he would need to lead from the front.

“I need to play my role positively and constructively. There are certain things we need to do as the police in this area to restore pride and integrity back into Hillbrow. We must make the environment more conducive so as for children to go and play in the parks and for people to walk on the streets of Hillbrow without fear or intimidation.

“We need to encourage people to get involved in community policing. We have structures which are constitutionally mandated and allow for people to get involved. My policy is that we need to strike a relationship between the police and the public through the various sectors, community policing and patrolling forums that are in place.”

When asked about the proactive steps that need to be taken in order to overthrow well established criminal elements such as the hijacked Vannin Court, Nevhuhulwi said it is one of his problem areas.

“As the police, we are dealing with the criminality that happens around the area. However, we still need to involve other stakeholders such as the City Council in order to move forward and prevent people from hijacking buildings and if they do, [ensure] that they can’t sustain it and we can then stop this rot.”
