Residents of Bramley in electricity fiasco

BRAMLEY – City Power has to fix all the substations properly and make sure they are secure.

Residents in Eden and Forest roads in Bramley have complained that the electricity in their area trips frequently due to a malfunctioning substation.

Resident Elizabeth Tagg said the problem had been going on for a long time but since November last year the electricity trips every two to three weeks.

Tagg said sometimes only some houses are without power, including houses behind hers in Eden Road, those in Forest Road and further up. She added that they reported the matter to City Power and electricians came to her house to check.

“We went with them to the substation just off High Road in Forest Road. Only one phase was affected which they repaired. We notified our councillor, David Fisher, who then sent a copy of my email to City Power deport manager Katlego Mogale to sort out the power problem in Bramley but the problem still persists. It is so annoying,” said Tagg.

She added that they had to replace their gate and alarm batteries due to the electricity tripping.

“With load shedding, we knew how long it would be, but now we don’t. City Power has to fix all the substations properly and make sure they are secure,” said Tagg. “We are fed up with this,” she said.

Fisher said he was aware of the power outages and added that the older established suburbs such as Bramley have ageing and unstable infrastructure.

“City Power has identified a R68-billion backlog in capital upgrades required in the whole of the city,” he said. “The new administration is working on prioritising those areas which suffer the most.

“Fortunately for the residents in Bramley, they are far better off than some other areas. The western side of the city has a problem bordering on a crisis and is receiving urgent attention.”

He added that he had a good relationship with Masondo. “She and her team work tirelessly and diligently to minimise the inconvenience to the residents.”

He encouraged all residents in Ward 74 to report power outages and send the reference numbers to him via email. Regarding substations, he said the same process should be followed, report, get a reference number and send it to him.
