Public objections delay Lombardy East housing project

LOMBARDY EAST – Housing project will create jobs and provide adequate accommodation for those who qualify.

Public objections are one of the issues delaying the proposed Johannesburg Social Housing Company’s (Joshco) project in Lombardy East, said Ward 81 Councillor Irene Rugheimer.

The housing project, which is expected to be built on Alexandra Road, has not materialised three years since it was proposed by the City of Joburg in 2014.

In an interview with the North Eastern Tribune on 7 June, Rugheimer explained that another holdup was appointing a community liaison officer for SMMEs. “The proposed project will start as soon as possible after the appointment of a liaison officer.

“At the moment there is only tall, uncut grass and there are no markings. A palisade fence surrounds the site.”

If the project goes ahead as planned, the councillor said it will be rental stock with about 513 units to be built. “It is expected that 154 single bedroom units, 342 double bedroom units and 17 paraplegic units will be built.

“Only South Africans may apply with a salary of between R3 500 and R7 000 per month.”

There will also be a taxi bay, bus bay, pedestrian walkways as well as a children’s playground between walkways, she added.

According to the councillor, the project will provide 200 jobs for locals.
