Norwood children celebrate Women’s Day significantly
NORWOOD – Children displayed placards reading 'stop raping women' and 'Stop abusing children'.
Children from the Norwood police quarters commemorated the annual Women’s Day on 8 August by staging entertaining activities at the Norwood Primary School’s hall.
They organised a beauty pageant, poetry and even a drama depicting the 1956 women’s march.
The event was organised by Linda Njeya (20) and Leandra Khumalo (18) and it was sponsored by a local parent, Phuthi Mphahlele.
It was all joy and play throughout the day with children performing their different characters, singing and dancing to a cheering crowd.
Linda said this was part of their youth development programme. “The idea is to empower young girls through art in our community and simultaneously celebrate Women’s Day significantly,” said Linda. “I can safely say this is a successful day for us and on behalf of all women in the Norwood police barracks.”
Leandra said she is happy to work with young children, especially girls, adding that they are very talented.
“This is the first time we organised this and already I’m excited with how they have conducted themselves,” she said.
“All the acts that they are performing – it is the first time that we did them and they are excelling already… I’m really excited.”
She encourages other children to participate in their programmes and explore their talent.
