#ICYMI: Heritage site revived
JOBURG – The Drill Hall was revamped with a budget of about R10 million in 2002 for the purpose of skills development but now is used by vagrants.
The City of Joburg has announced that it will revive the Drill Hall, a heritage site situated in the busy central business district of Joburg.
The Drill Hall is located near the busy Noord Taxi Rank, on the corner of Twist and Noord streets in Joubert Park.
This site is formerly known for its association with the treason trial of the late 50s, where 156 apartheid activists were accused and sentenced including Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu.
The South African Defence Force had occupied the building since 1904 and vacated the premises in 1992. The building was left unoccupied and vagrants took advantage of it.
This historic building was almost destroyed by a fire in 2001 and 2002. Teetering on the edge of decay, the building was resuscitated by a R10-million injection into its refurbishment by the Johannesburg Development Agency in 2004.
“The Drill Hall was meant to be revamped for the purpose of providing skills, training and childcare facilities. It was also going to be a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent,” read a statement issued by councillor Bongani Nkwanyana of the City’s community development committee
“With regret, this did not materialise. Instead, the building faced further neglect. The property was abandoned and exposed to vandalism.”
Reviving the Drill Hall will play a vital role in delivering services to a diverse community by redressing the inequalities of the past, continued the statement. “This will happen through integrated arts and culture, and incorporating a community-based-organisation in this significant historic era.”
By caring about the youth, diverse cultures, rich heritage and history, the City said they would demonstrate the strong desire for a better South Africa for all South Africans and this would be a great way to celebrate Heritage Month.
