Grab your chance to name new Rea Vaya bus stations
JOBURG – The Rea Vaya bus station names will be selected based on history or a geographic landmark.

The City of Joburg has made a clarion call to the residents of the Joburg east suburbs to propose new names for the currently under construction Rea Vaya bus stations.
There are about 13 new stations in Joburg and residents are invited to propose names for them as well as the four new interchanges and two new bridges built as part of the next phase of Rea Vaya to Alexandra.
According to the City, residents have until 31 October to send their proposed names for the bus stations, the pedestrian bridge over the M1 at the Marlboro interchanges, and a pedestrian path that is being completed in preparation of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) between Joburg CBD, Alexandra, Greenstone and Sandton.
“The City of Joburg policy requires that the members of the public must have a say in terms of the naming of these new transport infrastructures that we are building as part of the City’s transport master plan,” said Nonhlanhla Makhuba, MMC for Transport in the City.
“The stations are in the third phase of Rea Vaya, that will be up and running by October next year. We are encouraging all Joburg residents to take part in this historic naming of the stations, interchanges and bridges.”
The MMC said the names will be selected based either on the history of the area or a geographic landmark.
Community leaders are also being consulted including all key stakeholders and City councillors to participate in the process of proposing the names, she said.
For each station, bridge and interchange Makhuba said at least two names have to be suggested adding that the public will also be asked to vote for the final names.
