Metro police raid popular shebeen in Yeoville

Yeoville proportional representative councillor, Joshua Apfel, has welcomed the raid and subsequent removal of equipment at the notorious Zebra Pond.

On 18 February, Metro police raided the establishment and impounded a sound system after residents of Yeoville complained about noise.

Apfel said the shebeen disturbs residents of Yeoville with loud music late at night, adding that the place is also suspected of prostitution and drug dealing.

The PR councillor said petitions were sent to Zebra Pond before the raid, as well as Times Square in Raleigh Street. The two establishments are deemed problematic by residents, especially with noise.

These shebeens are said to be contravening by-laws, causing a disturbance in the neighbourhood.

“The sound cannot exceed a certain number of decibels and an establishment cannot be used as a place for criminal activity. As a business place, Zebra Pond and other establishments, are expected not to disturb local residents with loud music late at night and not to operate a place where criminal activity flourishes,” alleged Apfel.

People need to report such incidents by contacting their councillors or reporting to law enforcement agencies such as the Metro police.

“They must come forward with information and not be afraid of victimisation. They must persist in their efforts to make Yeoville a place where residents are free to live in peace,” he added.

Metro police spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed the incident. “Yes, our officers responded to the complaint and acted by impounding the sound system,” he said.
