St Katharine’s Preparatory learners celebrated Heritage Day in traditional attire on September 23.
Observed on September 24, Heritage Day celebrates South Africa’s cultural wealth and remembers the heritage of the many cultures that make up the population.

The school held an assembly featuring a musical piece by jazz musician Hugh Masekela, performed by staff.

Sinegugu Khuboni, head of transformation, diversity and inclusion, said learners were given homework to engage parents about their heritage.

“It is a continuation of what we did last year. Learners played Indigenous games, and henna art was painted on them, and this year we are focusing on the music that is listened to by different tribes at home,” Khuboni said.

She added that learners looked at how music linked to traditional family activities and functions.

Learners also researched traditional clothes and their meanings, while Grade 7 learners focused on traditional dances used as communication. Indigenous games were played, and henna art was painted on learners’ arms and hands.
