How to apply for speed bumps with the Johannesburg Roads Agency
JO BURG – JRA requires a traffic assessment and road safety audit to consider your application.
In its quest to assist residents to understand effective ways to apply for speed bumps, Johannesburg Roads Agency has provided some important advice.
Communications manager for the entity, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, said there are strict processes which need to be followed for the agency to consider the application.

Scheepers said speed bumps must be warranted as per the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual and City’s Traffic Calming Policy.
She recommended that residents approach their ward councillors for support and an approval letter.
Peters-Scheepers said, “Residents need a scaled A2 engineering design drawing depicting the position of proposed traffic-calming bump(s).
“They will also require a letter of support from the City’s regional director’s office as well as another one from Metro police responsible for speed law enforcement.”
In terms of documentation needed, the agency will also require traffic assessment or a road safety audit report for the entity to consider residents’ applications.

She said these documents must be submitted to the agency’s traffic engineering and analysis department for assessment and approval.
“On receipt of the above documentation, an investigation by the agency’s traffic engineering department will be undertaken to determine if the road class, gradient and geometric standard of all the mentioned roadways can accommodate and or warrant the installation of traffic-calming speed bumps.”
