Originally from Nigeria, the 25-year-old moved to South Africa to study economics at the University of South Africa in 2011. At the Vusi Mahlasela Music Foundation, he learned how to play the guitar and how to sight read, which he believes has helped him with his musical growth.
“My music is taken from my Yoruba background, telling various love stories and stories of abuse and hope,” he said.
He expressed excitement for the recent worldwide resurgence of interest in African music and culture with the release of the Black Panther this year. “I think its amazing that we don’t have to do strictly western styles of music, now we can rather focus on our cultures, stories and education.”
Following the auditions that took place last year, Rexy has been selected to take part in the International Arts Talent Showcase. The showcase is headed by an international talent scout, Kim Myers, giving talented entertainers the opportunity to show their talents to some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry in Orlando, Florida on 22 July until 2 August.
Rexy said, “It’s an amazing honour to have been selected and I’m quite excited to display my talent.”
He is also currently in the process of finishing his first release while finishing his honours degree in economics.
