Obstruction in Lombardy East being repaired

LOMBARDY EAST – A large hole in Lombardy East is finally being fixed by Johannesburg Water.

Lombardy East has turned into an obstacle course for drivers after a massive hole that was left, following work done by the City of Johannesburg during mid-February.

The botched reinstatements can be found on the corners of Marlborough Drive and Dante Street. The hole is surrounded by yellow barriers and is approximately 2m wide and approximately 1m deep.

According to one resident, the hole came about after Johannesburg Water attempted to fix a burst pipe on 21 February. The resident added that the teams arrived again on 14 and 15 April, but the problem wasn’t fixed.

The North Eastern Tribune contacted the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers who explained that when another government or private agency does work which requires roads to be dug up, a wayleave form needs to be issued which places responsibility on that entity.

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer said that Joburg Water will be finishing the work.

Following a request for comment from Johannesburg Water, the entity did not answer but did send a team to fix the burst pipe and reinstate the road.

Though the pipe has been repaired, as of 7 May, the section on the corner of Marlborough Drive and Dante Streets has yet to be reinstated.

The North Eastern Tribune is still awaiting comment from Johannesburg Water to explain why the hole was left for so long.
