Johannesburg car guard dies in a gruesome fist fight attack

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect handed himself over to the police after they had visited his home in Alexandra.

A car guard died after he was allegedly beaten to a pulp by an angry motorist who had accused the guard of helping himself to his valuables in the car.

This incident prompted Johannesburg police to appeal to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands when a crime is committed, rather report the incident to the police.

It happened on the corner of Rissik and Pritchard streets in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) on 7 August.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, a 25-year-old male suspect is currently in custody facing a charge of murder.

Mbele said the suspect handed himself over to the police after they had visited his home in Alexandra.

“It is alleged that the suspect assaulted a 26-year old male car guard with fists suspecting him of stealing or being involved in the disappearance of his valuables inside the car while he stepped out to buy food,” said Mbele.

“The suspect parked his silver-grey Toyota Yaris to go and buy food at a takeaway and when he came back, he realised that two bags were missing inside the car containing toiletries, ID book and a matric certificate.”

He questioned the car guard about his bags and a fight broke between the two and a car guard was severely injured, he added.

The suspect apparently drove off and the paramedics were called to the scene but the car guard was immediately certified dead on the scene.

An investigation is currently underway and the suspect is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
