A suspect was arrested by the Yeoville police for committing perjury after attempting to open a false hijacking case on 1 August.
Spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station Captain Sifiso Mabizela said the complainant reported that while driving a green Mini Cooper he was bumped by a white VW Polo on the corner of Hunter and Bezuidenhout streets. When he got out two armed assailants instructed him to move away and one of the assailants took his car and drove away.

Mabizela said, “Trio task team from the Johannesburg East Cluster was activated and reacted immediately and the vehicle was traced as it was fitted with a tracker. A suspect was arrested in Boksburg for being in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle .”
He added that upon investigation it was discovered that the complainant had sold the motor vehicle to the person arrested in Boksburg. “The complainant admitted that he opened a false case because he was afraid that the person he sold the car to will not pay the remaining balance. He was then arrested for perjury.”

Both suspects appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 2 August.
Mabizela concluded, “Yeoville police strongly condemn the reporting of false cases and hope the suspect feels the full might of the law so as to deter those who wilfully waste state resources for their own selfish reasons.”
