The Gauteng Police arrested over 1 200 suspects and seized 21 firearms across the province during a Buya Mthetho operation from 14 to 15 September.
Provincial spokesperson for the police Captain Kay Makhubela said, “These operations were conducted through roadblocks at identified crime hotspots. Three hundred and twenty suspects were arrested in Tshwane West Cluster during the raiding of 11 liquor establishments which were also closed.”
“Hundred and thirty suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes in Johannesburg Cluster were successfully traced and arrested. Another 20 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
Makhubela added, “In Soweto 139 suspects were arrested for crimes including possession of drugs, rape, murder, drunk and driving. Other operations were conducted in Ekurhuleni North and East as well as Tshwane Central Clusters, where over 700 suspects were arrested.”
He said that the police confiscated 21 firearms with hundreds of different ammunition being seized. Makhubela said, “This is a clear reflection that there are firearms somewhere in circulation possibly being utilised to commit more serious and violent crimes. Police will spend sleepless nights until those firearms are located and confiscated.”
The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts soon.
