A 32-year-old man remains in police custody for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman at his home in Doran Street in Jeppestown on 22 October.
The spokesperson for the Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, said the suspect lured his victim on a social media platform.
Munyayi said the victim apparently received a phone call from an unknown person who claimed that he knows her.

According to Munyayi, the victim asked the suspect to send her photos of him on WhatsApp so she could determine if they knew each other but after he had sent the photo, she realised that she did not recognise him.
“They kept on chatting until they met at his place. Then on Monday around midday she went to his place accompanied by her friend,” said Munyayi.
“On arrival, he offered to buy them something to drink but the victim’s friend told him that she needed to go back home to drop off the house keys. The man asked the victim to remain behind while her friend left.”
Munyayi continued, “When the friend had left, the suspect locked the door and started to touch her and when she refused he took out a knife and threatened her. He raped her and threatened her not to tell anyone but opened the door for her to leave.”
The victim went home and reported the incident to her mother who then took her to the police station where a case was opened.

“The police immediately went to the house and the suspect was arrested”, said Munyayi adding that he was charged with rape.
Police are appealing to the community to be vigilant when using social media and Munyayi said they should be careful about who they communicate with and who they agree to meet.
“Most importantly, they should also be careful of what they drink to avoid their drinks being spiked with some drugs,” he concluded.
