Two armed men allegedly overpowered a security guard at a warehouse in the City Deep area and tied him with ropes before being joined by a group of men travelling in two bakkies.
The incident took place at the Mpisi Trading Warehouse on the corner of Angus and Marino roads. According to the acting spokesperson for the Johannesburg East Cluster, Captain Richard Munyayi, two armed men entered the warehouse and allegedly pointed firearms at a security guard before tying him up with a rope.
The two suspects were later joined by a group of men who were travelling in two white trucks – a 10 and an eight tonner truck, both without registration plates.
According to Munyani, the men opened the containers and allegedly helped themselves to the goods inside, which included clothes, and loaded them onto the two trucks before driving off. He added that the other suspects remained behind to open more containers and prepare the goods to be loaded onto trucks once they returned.
“The other security guards who were on duty on the other side of the premises realised there was a robbery and alerted the police. The police responded quickly and rushed to the scene, where they found the men waiting for the truck to come back and fetch the other goods – some of the suspects were now wearing the stolen jeans.”
Johannesburg East Cluster police officers arrested 19 suspected robbers at the warehouse and who were all taken to the Cleveland Police Station and were charged with business robbery.
The suspects were detained in the police cells and are expected to appear in court soon.
The trucks and some of the goods stolen are still missing and Munyayi has appealed to anyone who might have information to contact the police.
